Taxpayers' group wants better Albany
written by Don Shirley of Albany, Georgia.
I have just attended my first meeting of the Dougherty Taxpayers Association, now also known as Sweep Albany Clean. I sat and listened to the reports of corruption and favoritism that is happening in the so-called "Good Life City." I heard the objectives of the group, which is they are not against ADICA or the development of downtown Albany; they are only concerned as to how our tax money is spent.
They are very concerned that Albany is the highest-taxed city in Georgia and they see no ending to the waste now prevalent in Albany. They are concerned that most of the city officials do not care about its citizens. They see little effort in improving the school system. They are puzzled that if Lee County can have a superior school system, then why can't Albany? What is wrong with our leaders that they cannot study the Lee County system and ask for help?
I looked at the people there were around me and observed that these were concerned about their city. They were not un-American or anti-government. They were not boisterous. They were people who truly care about Albany.
They see little improvement in the situation. I agree with all objectives and concerns, so I joined them in trying to improve our city. We need your help, no matter of race, party affiliation or whatever other groups you may be a part of. You may contact the Dougherty County Taxpayers Association, P.O.
